A Rose by Any Other Name: USCA to change to BSC
by Jeremy Till
USCA Summer President
On May 3, 2007, at their last meeting of the 2006-2007 academic year, the USCA Board of Directors voted to change the operating name of the University Students’ Cooperative Association to Berkeley Student Cooperative. The vote was the culmination of a semester-long process headed up by Sarah Horowitz, then the Vice President of External Affairs, and Jennifer Heller, Communications Coordinator. Though there were many reasons for changing the name, it was agreed that Berkeley Student Cooperative more succinctly described the location and purpose of the organization than the previous name. Using data on web searches that lead to the USCA website, Heller predicted that the new name would make the co-ops easier to find for those seeking student housing in Berkeley.
After the Board voted to change the name, a plan to implement the new
name on letterhead, websites, and signs was put into action. Under
this plan, the outside of the newly renovated Casa Zimbabwe/Central Office building will bear the new name. Rest assured, the official name of the organization will remain the University Students’ Cooperative Association, while
the organization will soon begin to operate under the nickname Berkeley Student Cooperative.
Jeremy graduated in May with a BA in Anthropology. He has been a USCA member since Fall 2003 and served as Vice President of Internal Affairs for the 2006-2007 academic year.
