Monique Guerrero Joins USCA Staff

By Jennifer Heller

Communications Coordinator

Late last year we hired a new addition to our team: Monique Guerrero. She has been heading up the Member Resources Department since last November with the same vigor she has for the San Francisco Giants—which is quite a lot!

Monique comes to us from working as the assistant principal of Lincoln Child Center, a school that serves five- to sixteen-year-old children with behavioral and emotional problems. “It was very rewarding and meaningful to be able to provide inspiration and guidance to all of our students.”

Not a stranger to the co-ops, Monique lived in Wolf House (where she lived with Central Warehouse Supervisor Heather Grey) and Rochdale Village from 1983 until 1987 before graduating from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in English. She found her time in the co-ops to be extremely educational—“I learned how to take care of myself, about recycling and vegetarianism, and even new foods. I remember one Wolf House Special Dinner where we bought live lobsters and cooked them ourselves!”

Monique served as house manager, board representative, and the hiring committee chair. As a board rep, she sat on a committee called MPACT, a subgroup that focused on putting on a variety of multicultural, GLBT friendly, and accessible events for the membership.

In her current purview, one of her major charges is continuing the work MPACT began. Monique supervises student workers, including the Disabled Access Coordinator and the Conflict Resolution Coordinator, and the Coordinator of Outreach, Diversity, and Affirmative Action. Monique says her position never ceases to be dynamic and exciting—“I love working with all of our bright, energetic, committed co-opers.” And word on the street is that they love working with her, too.
