For many years the Alumni News has been distributed to parents, friends, neighbors, and community leaders in addition to alumni. In order to reflect our diverse constituency, we are changing the name with this edition to Cooperatively Yours while expanding our mailing list to include co-op families and University and City officials. However, alumni remain our biggest supporters, and our content will continue to reflect our substantial alumni base.

A Tribute to George Proper
The big news in this edition of your newsletter is the retirement of the USCA’s long-time General Manager George Proper. George’s 38-year tenure speaks volumes about his dedication to the cooperative movement. I first met George at Barrington more than forty years ago, but it was only during the past eight years that I had the opportunity to observe him at the helm of the co-ops. Several things struck me about George: his total recall of the history and operations of the Co-op, his ability to do both long-range planning and to handle the day-to-day tasks; and his absolute commitment to the Co-op. It was impressive to watch.

We dedicate this edition of Cooperatively Yours to George, acknowledging all that he has done over the last four decades for students who have lived in the USCA and for the future students that will live here for decades to come. Thanks to George, the Co-op is stronger than it has ever been, with a solid base from which to move forward.

We are pleased that George will remain as a volunteer on the Alumni Board of Directors, working as a strong supporter of the USCA. Please join me in wishing George a happy and well-deserved retirement.

We Need a Few Good Alums!
Do you want to help the USCA? Would you like to keep in touch with the association and know what is happening in the houses and apartments? Want to reconnect with friends and colleagues and help keep the cooperative spirit alive? If so, you can give back to the co-ops by joining the USCA-AA Board of Directors.

Each fall we have an election for new members of the USCA Alumni Association Board of Directors. In this issue, we are providing notice of the election and asking interested candidates to place themselves in nomination for the board. I have found my time on the Board to be a rewarding and enlightening experience. I am sure you will as well. If you would like more information, please contact Meera, our Alumni Coordinator, at alumni@usca.org or (510) 848-1936.
