An individual is eligible for membership in the USCA for Fall and Spring if they are in one of the following categories:
1. Registered U.C. Berkeley student
2. Student at another post-secondary academic institution, under the following criteria:
- Must be a full-time student as defined by your academic institution
- Working toward recognized academic goals (examples include being enrolled in a degree program or obtaining a teaching credential) -- please note that if you attend community college, there are specific criteria for verifying your academic goal-- and
- At least half of your units must be in a classroom setting (i.e. – all of your units cannot be internet or distance learning courses)
3. Graduate students working full time on a thesis or dissertation or working on supervised research towards recognized academic goals.
4. Students graduating at the end of fall semester who need to take only those courses required to complete their degree. Limit: 1 semester.
5. Visiting scholars and post-Docs. Limit: 2 years.
6. Students not registered at U.C. Berkeley, but making up at least 6 units of incomplete class work at UCB. Limit: 1 semester.
Continuing members only are also eligible under SPECIAL STATUS:
A person off school for one semester, studying abroad, or preparing to begin another degree may be eligible for special status. No person may take more than three grace semesters total. No person may live in the USCA in consecutive grace semesters, except for 2 consecutive preparatory grace semesters. Any person participating in a UC abroad Program shall be considered to have been living in the USCA for the purpose of determining eligibility for grace semesters:
- Spring grace: a member who lived in the co-op and was a student in the preceding fall semester. In order to remain in the co-op for the following fall semester, you must meet regular eligibility requirements as a student.
- Fall grace: a member who lived in the co-op and was a student in the preceding Spring semester, and will live in the co-op and will be a student in the Spring following the grace semester. Verification of the member’s acceptance/registration at school for the Spring is required. If you graduate in Spring (or Summer), you may not take the next fall as your grace semester. If Fall will be your first academic semester living in the co-op, you are not eligible for a fall grace semester.
- Preparatory Grace: College graduates who are currently registered in coursework, under the following criteria: Minimum of 9 semester units of coursework, at least 5 of which are required for graduate school. You may take 2 consecutive prep grace semesters, but you may not take preparatory grace semesters in conjunction with regular grace semesters. You must apply for preparatory grace the semester before you want to use it. You will be notified when your application is approved.
- Academic Prep Grace: must be enrolled in 9 semester units (or corresponding quarter units, 5 of which must be required coursework for the degree program.
- Non-Academic Preparatory Grace: a minimum of 22 hours of unpaid, supervised, non-academic work (such as research, building a portfolio) that is required for admittance into the degree program. Studying for qualifying exams (MCATs, GREs) and work that improves one chances of admittance are NOT considered “required” work.
- Mixed Preparatory Grace: a member enrolled in fewer than 5 semester units, which are required coursework for the degree program, but also doing required non-academic coursework required, (2.5 hours/week for each unit to total 9 semester units).
Additional comments:
- IF YOU LIVE IN ROCHDALE, FENWICK, CLOYNE or THE CONVENT, YOU MUST BE A REGISTERED U.C. BERKELEY STUDENT.
Only UCB graduate and re-entry students are eligible to live in the Convent.
- Only graduate students, re-entry students, and visiting scholars are eligible to live at Hillegass/Parker.
- Any student who does not meet one of the above criteria must obtain PRIOR permission from staff or AdCom to be eligible to live in the USCA.
Please note: Membership eligibility is YOUR responsibility. If you sign a co-op contract and end up being ineligible, you will be found to be in breach of contract according to section 7& 8 of the contract.
