Food Waste
- Take care to put food waste into the green designated food waste bins instead of in garbage bins. Organic waste comprises the largest portion of the municipal waste stream, and if separated can be composted by the city. It is cheaper to dispose of food waste than garbage!
Energy
- Use stand-by and hibernate modes on your computer
- Get rid of plug loads (the energy used when things, such as cell phone chargers and kitchen appliances, use when “turned off” but still plugged in). Unplug appliances or use a power strip and turn it off when you leave your room or go to sleep
- Wash and dry full loads of laundry, and use cold water when you can
- Turn off lights when not utilized
Water
- Shorten your showers. Even a one or two minute reduction can save up to 700 gallons of water per month!
- Turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving. This can save 3 gallons each day.
- Use the garbage disposal less and the compost more.
- In the garden, put a layer of mulch around trees and plants to slow down evaporation.
