Housing for people, not for profit

The Berkeley Student Cooperative is a not-for-profit cooperative providing affordable housing to UC Berkeley and other full-time College students who meet our eligibility requirements. The co-ops provide an ideal place to meet new people and participate in a welcoming student community. We offer housing in 20 properties around the UC Berkeley campus for both the Academic Year (Fall and Spring) and for Summer

The houses are managed and operated through the efforts of members, and each co-op represents a distinct community with its own culture, systems, and unique benefits. Living in a co-op means that there is no need for you to own your own set of pots and pans, shop for and buy all your own supplies, do all the cleaning, have your own vacuum, cook every day, etc. By working together, we save money, conserve resources, and save time spent on chores!

Affordable

Because there is no landlord making a profit, the co-ops are the best deal in town. Budgets are collectively set by the members every spring and cost substantially less than private housing or residence halls. View the rates.

Just as important as the economical aspects of co-op living are its advantages as a social and learning experience. Members learn management, cooking, maintenance, and communication skills, as well as gain a sense of living in cooperation with a variety of other people. In the co-ops there are members of many diverse backgrounds, ages, interests, nationalities, and lifestyles drawn together into a community that promotes friendships, greater understanding of others, and an exchange of knowledge. People often join the co-op for the economy, but stay for the community!

Cooperation Makes It Happen

Co-op living works because of the fundamental cooperative philosophy: individuals coming together to have more control over their economic and social environments. Members provide the ideas, guidance, support and energy to make it work. Please take a look around our website or come visit our houses to learn more about the BSC.
